Ric Flair On John Cena Breaking His Record, Steve Austin On How Vince McMahon Would Handle It
As noted, on episode 17 of WOOOOO! Nation with Ric Flair, "the Nature Boy" welcomed "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to the show. During the podcast, the two discussed many topics including Flair's record 16 world championship reigns. In Austin's opinion, Flair's streak will always have special meaning to professional wrestling fans, even if John Cena surpasses Flair's record.
According to Austin, he can imagine Cena tying the record, but not breaking it. Moreover, Austin claimed that Vince McMahon will do something to distinguish the accomplishment, even if Cena breaks the record.
"He'll make up something that if [Cena] gets to 17, his were all WWE and Ric's place is still special," given that eight of the titles were from NWA. Austin continued, "so with all due respect to John Cena, if he was to get to 17 and they eclipse your number 16, does it mean the same in a guy's book like mine, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, my thoughts? It's not even the same ballpark."
In response, Flair indicated that he is not worried about Cena breaking his record for world title wins.
"I don't care. I don't think about it," Flair said. "I don't have any belts hanging in my room. I'm lucky. I have more fun than anybody alive. That I know for sure."
Interestingly, Austin claimed that McMahon maintains logbooks of important WWE records.
"I won three Royal Rumbles and no one has surpassed that yet and that's only three Royal Rumbles," Austin said. "For some reason, Vince has all this logged down in these books – he's very meticulous about how he protects certain things, so it will be very interesting."
In addition to talking about Flair's record, Flair and Austin discussed Triple H vs. Sting at WrestleMania 31, why WWE won't sign AJ Styles, and much more. Click here to listen to the rest of the show.
