Possible Opponents For Stone Cold
Steve Austin At WrestleMania 39
By WESLEY ROESCH
Steve Austin and AJ Styles might be a good pairing because Styles has proven his abilities to have a good match with anyone — from Shane McMahon to James Ellsworth. Moreover, Styles and Austin have clashed before in 2019 when “Stone Cold” stunned Styles after a brawl ensued, which could serve as lore for the possible feud.

After Vince McMahon defeated Pat McAfee with the help of Austin Theory on Night 2 of WrestleMania 38, Steve Austin arrived and hit both Theory and McMahon with stunners. So, storyline-wise, a match between Theory and Austin makes the most sense because Theory will look for retribution and he doesn’t have much else going on right now.

While the recently-turned heel Bobby Lashley can challenge Austin to a match at WrestleMania 39 to simply “hurt” “Stone Cold,” they do share a history inside the ring, although not as opponents. In 2007, Austin was the guest referee between Lashley and Umaga in The Battle of the Billionaires, but it’s unlikely that this’ll be used as an angle in the feud.

Bray Wyatt’s “Firefly Funhouse match” with John Cena at WrestleMania 36 saw Wyatt deconstruct Cena’s entire journey through the WWE, so the idea of Wyatt deconstructing Austin’s career has a great potential for storytelling, and their promos leading up to their clash will be a treat.

Austin vs Brock Lesnar was a dream match that never happened because Austin walked out of WWE when he learnt that he’d lose to Lesnar in a one-off match with zero buildup. The two have never faced off since then, so WM 39 might be Austin’s last chance to face the Beast inside the ring.
