UFC 189 Conference Call Recap: Conor McGregor Guarantees Finish, Says Jose Aldo Won't Be Back
Wrestling Inc was on the UFC 189 conference call today. You can see our full coverage below, and you can also listen to the call above. We'll also have full, live coverage of UFC 189 on July 11.
* Conor McGregor said that he doesn't have a gameplan. He lets the fight come to him. No though of him not taking the Mendes fight.
* McGregor says it's not about the title, it's about dominating on the division.
* Conor McGregor wants to fight on the Dublin card in October. It's not a stadium, so he doesn't see the eventual Aldo fight happening at that card.
* Mendes says taking this fight on short notice is perfect for him, as he doesn't let his weight get out of control. He thinks a lot of the Brazilians will be backing him up at the event.
* McGregor expected Aldo to pull out of the fight before the injury because he always saw fear in his eyes. He says he was going to "f-cking butcher" Aldo. He doesn't think Aldo will ever come back. He says Aldo should be stripped of the belt.
* McGregor thinks Mendes is in the wrong weight division because he gasses too quickly.
* Mendes says his striking will hold up against McGregor. He says he'll put McGregor on his back and finish the fight.
* Mendes says that within 24 hours of the Aldo injury news breaking, he was in Las Vegas to reach a deal with Dana White. He's open to fighting Frankie Edgar if Aldo isn't ready after this fight.
* Mendes says he's going to finish Conor McGregor in the first three minutes, and says the things McGregor says don't bother him.
* 15 minutes in we get the first Lawler-MacDonald question. Rory says that he's evolved as a fighter since the first bout with Lawler. Robbie says he's prepared and has been studying Rory hard.
* McGregor says fighting is all about the money, and of course he thinks about the PPV buys. He calls Mendes a B level guy. McGregor and Mendes are getting into it now.
* McGregor: "It would've been nice if Jose didn't p***y out, but this good." Says he looked Aldo in the eyes and knew that Aldo didn't want to be there.
* Conor McGregor calls Aldo's drug test situation a "weasel move." He says he was beaten mentally before he was physically. He says Mendes is just a wrestler with an overhand. McGregor and Aldo get into it again.
* McGregor says he's the only person who can fill a stadium on the roster, so he wants to do it in Ireland, not Brazil.
* McGregor says facing a wrestler is a part of the business. People wanting to know is what helps drive the business.
* Rory MacDonald says Conor McGregor is good for the sport, and he's making everyone more money.
* Robbie Lawler says more fighters need to know their bodies, and you need training partners you trust when you're preparing for fights.
* There have been no substantial refund requests for UFC 189.
* Conor McGregor shoots down rumors that he's getting stem cell treatment on his formerly injured knee.
* Conor McGregor says Jose Aldo has to face him in Ireland if he wants to face him now. Mendes agrees and says he's fought Aldo twice in Brazil, so he wants to fight him in the States.
* Lawler said he wants to get a more decisive win over Rory MacDonald this time.
* McGregor says that no matter what, there will always be people saying something to discredit him like saying he hasn't beaten a wrestler, that he'll beat Mendes on two weeks notice, that he's only interim champion.
* Lawler doesn't care about his first or last fight, he just wants to showcase his skill. He doesn't care if the rest of his career is an afterthought.
* Lawler: I'm self motivated. I don't need people to doubt me to wake up and work hard every day. I don't need any extra motivation.
