Retro Wednesday: Which 80s Tag Team Had The Better Theme Song?
There is no question that theme songs help define and shape a pro wrestler's career. When you think of legendary names such as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Steve Austin and the Rock, each or them has a distinctive and catchy song that perfectly fit the mold of their character.
During the 1980s, the tag team division was very prominent in both the WWE and NWA, amongst other promotions. The concept of theme songs apply to teams as well, especially since gimmicks were incredibly emphasized during that time. When it comes to 80s tag team theme songs, there are two teams that each had arguably the best and most exciting songs of their respective brands.
For the WWE, Ax and Smash owned the tag team theme song crown. Themes ongs such as Strike Force's "Girls in Cars", the Hart Foundation and the Rockers have memorable songs, but it was something about the words "Here comes the Ax, and here comes the Smasher; the Demolition, walking disaster; pain and destruction are our middle names" that was exhilarating. The spiked gear and facepaint created a perfect marriage between gimmick and music.
Then we have WCW/NWA. In an era where theme songs were commonplace for WWE, it was not as important for the rival promotion regarding tag teams. Many of the songs were generic, and sounded like there was not much work put behind them. However, one tag team theme song was definitely a cut above the rest, with the exception of the Fabulous Freebirds: the Midnight Express. With names such as "Beautiful" Bobby and "Sweet" Stan Lane, it was no choice for an apropos song to accompany such an eclectic duo. So, with the help of Giorgio Moroder, an intergalactic musical masterpiece was created, properly fitting the "Midnight Express" name. Certainly, this song was what many people would refer to as "ahead of its time."

Midnight Express trumps Demolition in the best 80s tag team theme song superlative. Both were amazing, though.
