DVD Review: OMG! The Top 50 Incidents In WWE History
They are moments that get die-hard and casual WWE fans buzzing. The reason you love pro-wrestling. The unforgettable spectacles that made you a true WWE fan. And the majority of them are compiled here in a documentary entitled "OMG! The Top 50 Incidents in WWE History." The set was recently released as a 3-Disc DVD and 2-Disc Blu-Ray set and is one of the better WWE DVDs to come out this year.
Disc Content
The main feature of the disc is a count-down that relives all 50 moments ranked to number 1. It ranges from the booming 1980s with figures like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and Roddy Piper until modern times like the 2010 Nexus invasion.
There are obvious selections like the Montreal Screwjob, Edge's first Money in the Bank victory and Triple H's Las Vegas wedding to Stephanie McMahon. The highlights come in-between where you can relive rare moments like Undertaker delivering a tombstone to Triple H on an escalator, Kane setting JR on fire and Snitsky's infamous baby punt.
For older fans, a lot of the greatness from the DVD not only comes from reliving the moments, but remembering when you first saw them. Whether you were in your jammies clutching a WWF Wrestling Buddy or live in the stands with your Dad, the disc brings back the emotion and shock when you witnessed these moments yourself.
Wrestler Commentary
The DVD production really blew it on this one. Instead of featuring past and present talents like Shawn Michaels, Triple H, The Undertaker, Edge and even Vince McMahon himself, viewers are treated to commentary and tidbits from the likes of Kofi Kingston, Tyson Kidd, Daniel Bryan, Evan Bourne and recently released star Chris Masters.
It's like the interviews were taped before the wrestlers got set for another edition of "WWE Superstars." The comments are boring, do not add to the product and occasionally make you angry when you just want to see the section without interruption.
Jerry "The King" Lawyer offers a few laughs and great lines, but his appearances on the documentary are too far and between. Even if you get used to the mid-card jabber, nothing compares to the annoyance of Santino Marello's in-character commentary. It's not amusing, he wrecks almost every segment he appears in and in three years anything he has to say will be irrelevant.
Stone Cold Moments
One of the best highlights on the DVD is the collection of Stone Cold Steve Austin moments. Out of the 50 moments, the Rattlesnake is included in 11 of them. The DX bus being blown up, his grocery store brawl with Booker T and the McMahon beer bath are some of the best of the 11 as fans are reminded why Austin is the best inside and out of the WWE ring.
The disc could have done without the zamboni attack, especially so close to the beer bath, but it all serves as a great extended preview to the four-disc "Stone Cold Steve Austin" DVD set later this fall.
Missing Moments
The title obviously limits the set to 50 moments, but there were a few replaceable ones and missing highlights. John Cena's Attitude Adjustment to Edge and Big Show from Wrestlemania 25 was impressive, but he has shown his feats of strength before. Moments like his Attitude Adjustment to the Great Khali at Extreme Rules or to Edge in their TLC match would have fared better on the disc.
Other missing WWE moments include Vince McMahon's resurrection of the NWO in 2002, Shawn Michaels thrown through a car windshield just before his in-ring return, Triple H ending an episode of "WWE Raw" by proclaiming Kane is a murderer, Kevin Nash putting Bret Hart through a table for the first time, Undertaker's ghost appearing after the 1994 Royal Rumble casket match against Yokozuna, Undertaker's casket lit on fire during the 1998 Royal Rumble casket match against Shawn Michaels and Legion of Doom's Hawk jumping off the WWE Titantron during an episode of "WWE Raw."
I guess it just leaves the WWE Universe more to debate and a potential "WTF?! 50 More Moments" DVD release.
Bonus Content
The bonus content on the discs include the full segments and matches featured on the main documentary. This includes the full TLC tag team match from Wrestlemania X-Seven, the Mankind vs. Undertaker Hell in a Cell match and the Kurt Angle and Shane McMahon street fight from the 2001 King of the Ring tournament.
Overall
This has been a highly anticipated release since it was announced. While a lot of the Stone Steve Cold Steve Austin stuff is on past DVDs, the Booker T grocery store brawl is one of the best parts of the set. Without the useless wrestler commentary, the set would have been perfection, but it loses some steam for that factor alone.
