After a record-breaking, held-over three week run in Memphis, Memphis Heat: The True Story of Memphis Wrasslin' documentary makes its Nashville debut Friday, June 17, at 9:00 p.m. at the Belcourt Theater. Memphis Heat tells the wild and wooly tale of Southern wrestling–beginning with the carnival days of Sputnik Monroe and Billy Wicks in the late '50s. Memphis Heat continues with the Jackie Fargo/Len Rossi/Saul Weingeroff masked-men and tag-team dominated '60s. The film continues on into the raucous '70s and '80s with the up-and-coming Jerry Lawler and Jimmy Hart and the rise of Jerry Jarrett as one of the great wrestling promoters, who kept one of the richest (and last) wrestling businesses in the country. The film covers the rich history of Mid-South wrestling, based around Roy Welch and Nick Gulas' territory, where the wrestlers (and hq) were all based out of Nashville and the old Sam Davis Hotel.
