'Baby Face' José Guadalupe Fuentes Ochoa Dead, Lucha Libre Star Dies At 79

The lucha libre community is in mourning, as José Guadalupe Fuentes Ochoa, better known to those within the squared circle community as "Baby Face," passed away this past Friday at the age of 79.

Retired luchador El Hijo del Santo, who shared the ring with Fuentes Ochoa as his top opposition over the years, was the first to break the news online on X [formerly known as Twitter]. Translated from Spanish to English, he wrote: "I deeply regret the passing of my dear "Baby Face" José Guadalupe Fuentes Ochoa. August 31, 1947 — September 25, 2026. Great figure of Mexican Wrestling and beloved professional companion. Rest in peace. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and to the entire Wrestling family."

From Colima, Mexico, he made his pro wrestling debut in the 1970s, becoming a staple and poster star in some of the most iconic cathedrals in Mexico, such as Arena México and former Toreo de Cuatro Caminos. But don't let the "Baby Face" nickname fool you; he was known mostly as a "rudo," a heel and a rule breaker. Nevertheless, that worked to his advantage, as the former talent went from being featured in AAA and CMLL in Mexico, to broadening his horizons and landing in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

In 1981, he took home the big prize as the new Mexican National Light Heavyweight Champion, which he held for 570 days. In 2000, he suffered a severe injury, which forced him to retire from in-ring competition after 32 years. Rather than walk away from the spotlight for good, he established his own business called "Baby Face's Rice Dishes." It was met with wide success.
