Retro Wednesday: Night Of Champions 2007 - Every Match For A Championship

For many years, the Vengeance pay-per-view was one of the most memorable minor (non-"Big Four") events held by the WWE. From Chris Jericho unifying the WWE and WCW Championships, to John Cena's first PPV debut, to Batista retaining his world title in a Hell in a Cell match, these are just some of many defining moments that came out of this PPV series.

In 2007, we saw the final Vengeance PPV until one last occurrence in 2011, as it was rechristened as "Night of Champions," featuring every match on the card for a title. This concept would continue until 2010, when a match between Big Show and CM Punk broke the streak of matches that were for a championship.

The 2007 main event was a Five-pack Championship Challenge between then-WWE Champion John Cena defending his championship against King Booker, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, and Mick Foley. This was Foley's last PPV match, as he was pinned by Cena.

Other championships that were defended on the card were the World Heavyweight (Edge d. Batista – c/o), IC (Santino d. Umaga – DQ), US (MVP d. Ric Flair), WWE/World Tag Team (Deuce n' Domino d. Sgt. Slaugher/Jimmy Snuka, Cade/Murdoch d. Hardy Boyz), Cruiserweight (Chavo d. Jimmy Wang Yang), ECW (Johnny Nitro – a late No. 1 contender – d. CM Punk), and Women's (Candice Michelle d. Melina).

Night of Champions has become a mainstay in the annual list of PPVs, due to its unique concept of having every title on the line. Although the unique element of every match being for a title no longer exists, this is one day out of the year that all titles are showcased. This Sunday, John Cena has an opportunity of tying Ric Flair's record for world title reigns, if he manages to defeat Brock Lesnar and get retribution from the brutal beating suffered at SummerSlam.
