Mayweather improved his record to 46-0, with each of his past two victories coming via majority decision. He discussed a potential rematch with Maidana during the post-fight media scrum, which you can listen to in the video above courtesy of Fight Hub TV.
During the fight, Mayweather landed 230 strikes compared to 221 by Maidana, but the challenger was more offensive-minded. Maidana threw 858 strikes, including 100 in the opening three-minute round.
"I was in a tough, competitive fight," Mayweather said in the ring after. "Normally, I blow a guy out. He was a very good fighter."
Maidana criticized Mayweather for his lack of punches, saying, "I definitely think I won. He didn't fight like the man I thought he would."
It was the most times Mayweather has been hit in his career, and he told Maidana during the post-fight press conference that they could do a rematch in September.
"I thought that I was a boxer and he was a WWE wrestler," Mayweather said. "That's what I thought."
- Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller have been tabbed for the main event slot at UFC Fight Night 45, officials confirmed with The Press of Atlantic City recently. The card is set for July 16 from The Revel in New Jersey.
Cerrone (23-6) is coming off a submission victory over Edson Barboza that pushed his overall UFC record to 10-3. Miller (24-4) stopped Yancy Medeiros via submission last month.
"I'm very excited to fight Cerrone," Miller said. "He's a game fighter and I like tough fights. Jersey is where I made a name for myself and to headline a card basically at home is going to be a very special experience for me."
- Former UFC welterweight title contenders Jake Shields and Jon Fitch will meet in the co-main event of World Series of Fighting 11. The promotion confirmed the fight for July 5. The main event will feature lightweight champion Justin Gaethje vs. Nick Newell.
Shields (29-7-1) was released by the UFC earlier this year after a loss to Hector Lombard. He was unbeaten in his four fights prior, including three wins and a no-contest. Fitch (25-6-1) was scheduled to meet WSOF champion Rousimar Palhares, but Palhares pulled out of the fight due to a family emergency.
The card is expected to air on NBC Sports Network, with fellow former UFC fighter Melvin Guillard meeting Gesias Cavalcante on the main card, as well.
